The best way to find out whether a car is right for you is to spend some quality time with it. That’s why we gave the new MG3 to the Judd family for a full week.
Our Autocar road test team certainly found plenty to like about the MG3 when they got their hands on the MG3 Exclusive trim back in August, praising its handsome exterior design, feature-packed cabin and handling with ‘a likeable sparkle’ – as well as its overall value for money.
But what did the Judds think? Well, as sports journalist dad Nick, fitness instructor mum Vicky, and their two boys Charlie and Rory found out, it’s a perfect hatchback for busy and active family lives.

Stylish inside and out
The new MG3 may be small and city-friendly, but it certainly made a big impression on all the Judds with its full-face grille, bold MG badges and the 16” alloy wheels that come fitted on the Excite and this Exclusive trim.
Both Nick and Vicky – who used the car for work commuting, as well as the school run – were impressed with the stripped-back interior, which hides a wealth of clever tech features that you can use through the eight-inch colour touchscreen.
The reversing camera and parking sensors were useful for fast, easy parking on the school run, while Apple CarPlay™ and Bluetooth connectivity let Nick and Vicky use apps for sat-nav and hands-free calls and texts – perfect for staying in touch with work clients, and each other, in order to juggle their busy lives while on the move.
The DAB radio and the Apple CarPlay™ Spotfiy app also offered up a world of music for parents and kids alike.
Room for big (and little) lives
In the back of the MG3, there’s enough head room and leg room for four adults to sit in comfort on long journeys, with ISOFIX connectors for child seats. The boot is large and practical, while there are more than enough cubbyholes in the spacious cabin for belongings – both big and small.
The MG3 holds it own on both city streets and on the open road. The sporty chassis was honed for British roads by MG’s UK-based engineering team, so it’s fun to drive, while the 1.5-litre petrol-powered engine comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, producing 106PS – which is an impressive amount, compared to some of its key class rivals. It also benefits from stop-start technology for improved fuel efficiency
Then there’s the benefit of the confidence-inspiring seven-year warranty, low running costs and low insurance rating – all of which make the MG3 a fun, affordable, feature-packed supermini, no matter how large (or small) your family.
