With an eye-catching design and a spacious, practical interior, the MG ZS is a fresh new choice for those looking for an affordable and family-friendly compact SUV.
It’s one of the most spacious models in its class, with plenty of room for growing families and their belongings. The interior is also packed with an impressive array of standard features you may not expect from its affordable price tag, while the chassis has been tuned with Britain’s roads in mind – meaning you can take the rough with the smooth, either out on the open road or on the school run.
Our Autocar road test team praised its smooth and refined automatic gearbox and handling, while noting that the interior stood out in the budget compact SUV class.
But, in order to give you a chance to see if the new MG ZS suits your needs, we asked Heart Breakfast presenter Nicola Hume to take a look inside.

It’s got the looks
A distinctive design helps the MG ZS stand out from the crowd: including features such as its unique LED headlights, and the chrome detailing that adds a premium look to the model – even if the price isn’t.
You can pick one of six bold colours for your MG ZS, including the tri-coat Dynamic Red: giving you a deep, rich shade to give it that extra wow factor.
There are also three trim levels for you to choose from, with even the entry-level Explore getting top-end features such as cruise control and Bluetooth as standard.
The mid-range Excite goes further, adding alloy wheels, air-conditioning, parking sensors, plus an eight-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. The top-end Exclusive trim also includes satellite navigation and a reversing camera.
Honed for British roads
You can take your pick from two petrol engines on the MG ZS. The 1.5-litre unit comes with 106PS and a five-speed manual gearbox, and will help you with tackling typical family tasks. Then there’s the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine, which comes with 110PS and a six-speed automatic transmission that will give you a smooth drive.
The chassis of the MG ZS has been re-engineered for British roads, meaning it feels more refined, agile, more engaging, and able to cope with all sorts of road conditions. There are also three steering modes – unique to the UK market – for Excite and Exclusive models: Urban, Normal and Dynamic.
Inside, there’s plenty of room for the family to come along for the ride. There’s more than enough room for those to stretch out in front, with lots of headroom and legroom. And those in the back benefit, too, with space for growing children, and numerous toys and other items to entertain rear-seat passengers. The boot is also roomy, being one of the largest in this increasingly competitive class.
