Confirmed: JLR to axe roughly 9% of global workforce

Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed it will make cuts to its non-manufacturing workforce in the UK as it looks to make savings amid global pressures on profitability. The company is looking to axe around 4000 staff, around 12% of its 34,000-strong UK workforce, according to reports in The Times. JLR confirmed to Autocar in a statement that it is “opening a voluntary redundancy programme offering salaried and management team members the opportunity to leave the business”. The company is looking to make savings of £1.7 billion in two years to help weather a rapidly shifting global automotive landscape, including dramatic declines in sales for European premium brands in China and increased US tariffs. “To achieve this, we must further simplify our organisation, improve efficiency, and build greater resilience,” JLR said in the statement. JLR has already made changes to its manufacturing structure, including stopping making vehicles at its Castle Bromwich plant, which now supplies parts to its remaining assembly plants. The company's main UK sites include its car factories in Solihull and Halewood, the engine production facility in Wolverhampton, its headquarters in Gaydon, the Whitley engineering centre and its panel pressing facility at the ex-Jaguar factory in Castle Bromwich. Managerial positions at the company have already been slimmed down after a round of cuts made last year, again offered voluntarily. The new job cuts are likely to affect JLR’s engineering, sales and marketing divisions as the company looks to share more of the workload with divisions in the wider Tata Group parent company. JLR is also looking at partnerships outside the group, including with Stellantis in the US and India and Chery in China. JLR posted a loss in the financial year ending March this year after a difficult 12 months in which it badly affected by the September cyber attack. The company returned to profitability in the first quarter this year but the 2.6% profit margins was well down on the 8.5% figure it posted for the financial year ending March 2025. The company has been hurt by the collapse in once profitable sales in China after consumers this year turned their back on European premium brands. JLR sales were down 24% in the quarter ending June, according to its figure.
