March’s registration statistics show that the popularity of Ford’s Focus remains as high as ever. Exactly 27,750 new Focuses were registered, over 10,000 more than the second-placed car, Vauxhall’s Astra. However, Vauxhall is planning to close that gap with a new addition to the Astra range: a super frugal 1.3 CDTi diesel engine. VW’s Golf came a comparatively lowly seventh, with 11,693 registrations. But price cuts to every car in the range should boost the car’s popularity. Basic ‘S’ spec now costs £150 less and includes air-con as standard, ‘SE’ trim is £345 cheaper and features electric rear windows, you can save £815 on a ‘Sport’ model, and there’s also £910 off a GT.
As for web discounts: you can get £2199 off an Astra 1.7 CDTi 80 Life through www.broadspeed.com, but VW’s Golf SDI remains the cheapest diesel bet – it’s available for just £11,029 through www.jamjar.com.
