Currently reading: Forfour undercuts rival 'minis

Smart’s first four-seater lands in British showrooms on 1 September priced from £7995 – pitching it beneath rival five-door superminis from Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen. However, only 250 of the basic 1.1-litre Black special edition Forfour (above) will be sold in the UK; after that, the cheapest model is the £8995 1.1 Pulse.

Buyers can pick from three petrol engines: 75bhp 1.1, 95bhp 1.3 and 109bhp 1.5 – and two diesels: a 68bhp or 95bhp version of the 1.5 CDi. It’s the first Smart sold in the UK with a diesel engine and also the first to offer a manual gearbox. Standard equipment includes twin front and side airbags, sliding rear seat, electric front windows and a stereo.
