Prices for the new Volkswagen Golf have been announced today. The range kicks off with the £11,995 1.4S 3dr, rising to £18,530 for the range topping GT TDi 2.0-litre.

Five engines, three petrol and two diesel, and three trim levels will be available when it hits the showrooms on January 30. Petrol power comes from the 1.4-litre 75bhp unit, plus two direct injection FSI motors, a 1.4-litre 90bhp and 1.6-litre 115bhp. Diesel fans get to pick between a 105 bhp 1.9-litre and a 2.0-litre with 136bhp.

All models come equipped with six airbags, anti-lock brakes , ESP and powered front windows and mirrors. But you’ll have to pay the £1080 premium for the SE versions to get air-conditioning and alloy wheels as standard. GT models will come with sports suspension, front sports seats and 16-inch alloys.

In March two new engines will join the line up. A 2.0-litre FSI petrol, with 150bhp and another diesel, a 75bhp 2.0-litre SDi.
