Lexus has tweaked its Mercedes SL rival with a new gearbox and detail changes

Lexus has introduced a raft of refinements for its SC430 coupe-cabriolet for 2006.

Key change for Japan’s answer to the Mercedes SL is a new six-speed automatic gearbox, complete with sequential manual override. Shared with the Lexus LS and GS saloons, the new ‘box cuts the 0-62mph dash by 0.2sec to 6.2sec while boosting fuel consumption from 23.5mpg to a claimed 24.8mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are also improved, dropping from 287g/km to 269g/km.

Other technical changes include adaptive front lights to help drivers see around dark corners and new faster-acting LED taillights.

Accompanying the mechanical revisions are mild styling tweaks, with a restyled grille, bumper, headlamps and indicators to keep the front end fresh. Concluding the makeover is a new set of 18in alloy wheels.

The rest of the 282bhp Lexus remains unchanged – save the price, which goes up by £2000 to £54,690.
