Currently reading: Audi targets seven-figure sales

Audi is aiming for a million sales annually by 2007-8 – fuelled by a raft of new models, including the five-door A3 Sportback estate, the Le Mans supercar (pictured right) and a brace of new off-roaders.

International sales and marketing director Ralph Weyler said Audi sold 770,000 cars globally last year and is confident that with ‘continuous, consistent growth’ the company can reach the magical million-a-year mark.

The 4x4s include the production version of the Pikes Peak and a new smaller SUV to compete with the BMW X3. Rival BMW is aiming for 1.4 million sales across the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands by 2008.

Meanwhile, Audi parent company VW announced ‘lousy’ trading conditions and is axing 5000 jobs.
