BMW and VW make the year's top engines

BMW's V10 M unit, as seen in the M5 and M6, has got the top award at the Engine of the Year awards in Stuttgart.

Judged by sixty motoring journalists from twenty-nine countries, the awards have been running since 1999 and have re-crowned the V10 after its victory in 2005. This time the M engine also re-took the Performance Engine of the Year and Above 4.0-litre prizes.

BMW also won the 2.5-3.0-litre and 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre categories with the 3.0-litre diesel from the 535d and its 3.2-litre M unit.

VW scored with the Twincharger which won the Best New Engine of the Year and the 1.0-1.4-litre categories. The 2.0-litre from the Golf GTi also won the 1.8-2.0-litre class.

The other manufacturers to get a look in were Toyota with its 1.5-litre hybrid unit from the Prius, which won for the second year running for fuel economy and in its displacement class; Subaru with its 2.5-litre turbo and Honda's IMA unit in the sub 1.0-litre class.
