The 24 millionth Golf has been built at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant

Volkswagen this week built its 24 millionth Golf at the Wolfsburg factory in Germany.

In 2002 the Golf overtook the Beetle as the firm’s biggest ever seller, and the arrival of the 24 millionth car – a red 2.0 TDi 140 five-door – comes 31 years after production of the MkI Golf began.

This production milestone coincides with the arrival of the new R32, which goes on sale in the UK today (November 18). With a 247bhp V6 driving all four wheels the new R32 is the most powerful Golf yet, with prices starting at £23,745 for the manual three-door version.
