Sports car and supercar maker pipped BMW to top spot, as well as winning inspirational leadership gong

McLaren has been voted as Britain’s most admired car company, as well as winning an award for inspirational leadership, at an awards ceremony organised by Management Today.

Established in 1990, the Britain’s Most Admired Companies (BMAC) competition is unique in that the winners are voted for by 234 business leaders, analysts and commentators from across all industries, including competing companies in each sector.

McLaren pipped BMW to win the title as Britain’s most admired car company and went on to finish sixth overall in the UK, with BMW seventh. Bentley was the only other car company in the top 20. That placed both automotive companies ahead of firms such as Unilever, Coca-Cola European Partners and GlaxoSmithKline. The first-placed company was drinks giant Diageo.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, who joined the firm in 2012 and has overseen growth in every year he has run the company to the extent that it now provides 80% of the McLaren Group’s turnover, accepted the award, saying: “Both awards are ultimately down to an incredibly dedicated workforce led by management who inspire and empower our people to do their best work every day.

“I’m delighted, therefore, to collect these awards on behalf of our entire workforce and thank them all for commitment which, in turn, continues to inspire me.”

Flewitt has also overseen the launch of the company’s ambitious Track25 business plan, revealed this summer, which will result in the company launching 18 new models or derivatives by 2025, with all of its sports cars and supercars running with hybrid powertrains by that date.
