Currently reading: No diesel for Cayenne

Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking has quashed rumours that the Cayenne will be fitted with a diesel engine to boost European sales.

Speaking at Porsche’s annual press conference in Stuttgart, Wiedeking told Autocar there were ‘absolutely no plans’ to use either Volkswagen’s 5.0-litre V10 or Audi’s 4.0-litre V8 diesels.

‘We don’t believe we should follow a diesel strategy [with the Cayenne],’ said Weideking. ‘Gasoline engines are going to become much cleaner in the future, and they are the correct concept for Porsche to pursue.’

Despite a drop in both Boxster and 911 sales (16 per cent and 14 per cent down respectively), the Cayenne helped Porsche to a record 66,803 sales in 2002-03.
