Currently reading: Toyota takes number two spot

Toyota and Ford are locked in a battle for the title of world’s second-biggest car maker.

The Japanese giant has overtaken Ford with 3.17m vehicles sold globally, 43,000 ahead in the six months from April to end of September.

‘We’re a lot more focused on our individual markets and brand-to-brand comparisons,’ a Ford spokesman retorted.

Toyota has been closing on Ford since 1996 when the gap was 1.9m units. If the positions are reversed over a year, it will mark a historic change in the world’s global pecking order.
