Union to lobby Peugeot over Ryton future

Unions at the doomed Ryton car plant say they will try to persuade owner Peugeot to keep it open beyond next year.

PSA Peugeot-Citroën announced yesterday that it is phasing out production at the Warwickshire factory by mid-2007, at the cost of 2300 jobs. But the Transport & General Workers' Union says that it will lobby for the plant to remain open. It is meeting employees from both night and day shifts today.

The Union's local representative Des Quinn told the BBC, 'The plant is productive and profitable - that they've never denied. We'll be trying our best to convince them that their decision is short-sighted, unjust and to overturn it.'

However, most business analysts expect Peugeot to stick to its decision. The French firm says that Ryton is the most expensive manufacturing site in Europe and that every 206 model built there costs 415 Euros more than at its other plants.
