The VW Group will launch a new mobility services brand that will focus on offering autonomous and shared transport services later this year.
Volkswagen announced the brand's arrival on the eve of the Paris motor show, where it is also demonstrating its first purpose-built electric model, the ID (pictured).
The new brand is the 13th VW Group company. It will work towards the group's Together Strategy 2025, which aims to produce 30 electric cars by 2025.
The brand will link with partner Gett and its taxi hailing service, and could see Volkswagen introduce an autonomous shuttle service for urban areas, representing a form of car sharing.
Private cars could also run on connected technology developed through the new company, suggesting its services could influence future models.
“In the future, many people will no longer own a car,” said VW Group CEO Matthias Müller. “But they can all be a Volkswagen customer in one way or another – because we will service a much broader concept of mobility than is the case today.
Volkswagen plans to move away from just selling cars and wants to be a leading mobility service provider by 2025. It targets becoming the market leader in Europe.
The new mobility services brand will be launched this November. The name of the company will be revealed to coincide with business opening.
