Currently reading: Congestion charge hike

London’s congestion charge should rise to £8 next July, says mayor Ken Livingstone. He suggested a daily tariff of £8 for cars, £7 for commercial fleet vehicles and a 15 per cent discount for those paying monthly or yearly.

Livingstone claims the 60 per cent hike would reduce traffic within the zone by at least a further five per cent, and raise another £50 million a year for public transport. The proposal has been slammed by transport unions and motoring organisations as a ‘thinly veiled attempt’ to increase revenue, rather than improve London’s transport.
