Motorists are putting themselves at risk by failing to check their lights, according to the RAC Foundation.
The group is launching a campaign for an active effort by UK motorists to cut down on the amount of crashes due to defective or poorly maintained lights. In 2001, ten per cent of motorcycles and 16 per cent of cars failed the MoT because of faulty lights.
Night-time accident prevention isn’t solely up to the motoring public though. The Government is considering allowing the sale of retro-reflective tape for HGVs, which will vastly improve their visibility on poorly lit roads. US studies found that 41 per cent of all side and rear collisions with HGVs could have been avoided had retro-reflective tape been applied.
The Highways Agency also has a part to play according to the RAC. The campaigns will be lobbying for improved road conditions through maintaining adequate lighting and keeping signs and lines clean and legible.
