The police will breathalyse more than 100,000 drivers in December in an attempt to keep the festive season's excesses from spilling out onto our roads; this week, Autocar asks if this is enough.

Autocar's special report on drink-driving in the UK lays out some sobering figures. 'In 1998 815,500 breath tests were carried out and 102,300 failed. In 2002, 570,000 tests were administered, yet 103,000 drivers failed.' So is Britain letting an increasing minority of drunk-drivers off the hook?
