Currently reading: Tougher UK driving laws in train

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling has announced exactly how the government plans to reform driving laws next year. Included in the Road Safety Bill is a stepped fixed-penalty scheme for speeding offences. Less serious offences (below 35mph in a 30mph zone) will qualify for just two points and a £40 fine, but those caught above 45mph in a 30mph limit will get six points and a £100 penalty. The current three points and £60 fine will remain for other offences.

Radar- and laser-based speed-camera detectors will also be banned, and road-side breath tests will become submissable as evidence.
