BMW is cashing in on the soar-away success of its diesel models by launching a new oil-burning 3-series: the 318d.

Saloon and estate go on sale in April with prices from £19,995. Most buyers are expected to pick the manual 'box to sidestep the three per cent company car tax surcharge, as the car meets Euro4 emissions regulations. CO2 emissions are 151g/km, which puts it in the 16 per cent band; the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel has been detuned to 115bhp.
