One of the key themes at Detroit was the march of the Japanese manufacturers into the American heartland: the full-sized pick-up truck.

Honda's SUT concept is close to the production model, to be launched in 2005 and aimed at dynamic driving. Similarly, the massive, Tonka-like Toyota FTX previews the '05 Tundra. Toyota is so serious about pick-ups that it is building a new factory in San Antonio.

Mitsubishi unveiled the Sport Truck Concept, due next year using '75 per cent' of the concept. Nissan already sells the Titan and also showed the revised 2005 Frontier pick-up.
