Mitsubishi has added a third powertrain to the Outlander line-up, meaning buyers now have the choice of a new petrol variant, or the existing diesel or plug-in hybrid.
The petrol Outlander is powered by a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated unit, which produces 148bhp and 144lb ft of torque. It’s connected to a CVT gearbox and gets four-wheel drive as standard.
Available only in Juro and 4 trims, this model is priced from £27,680 — £5140 less than a similarly equipped diesel variant or £9085 less than the equivalent plug-in hybrid version.
Juro is the entry-level trim available with the petrol-only engine, while 2 and 3 that are available with the diesel engine aren’t offered on the petrol model. The petrol unit provides a cheaper entry into the higher trims; the entry-level Outlander is the 2.2-litre diesel model in 2 trim, at £25,920 (or £1760 less than the cheapest petrol).
The petrol engine is slower than the other powertrains, taking 13.3sec to reach 62mph from standstill, with a top speed of 118mph. The plug-in hybrid takes 11.0sec but has a top speed that's 12mph slower, while the diesel is the quickest, with a 0-62mph time of 10.2sec and a 124mph top speed.
On the WLTP test cycle, the petrol model is claimed to produce 196g/km of CO2 and returns fuel economy of 32.5mpg, compared with the plug-in hybrid’s 46g/km and 139mpg, and the diesel’s 139g/km CO2 and 53mpg.
