America gets an upgraded version of the large off-roader

Toyota has launched an upgraded version of the Toyota 4Runner in the US.

The Japanese firm has designed it to look as truck like as possible to give it “a more rugged, powerful stance”. It is taller, longer and wider than the outgoing model.

Changes over the old model include a new front grille, a new roof rack and new bumper guards.

The body-on-frame construction of the old model remains, while two different four-wheel drive systems are offered. High-spec models get the permanent four-wheel drive system with a centre-locking differential for improved off road performance.

Two engines are offered: a 266bhp, 278lb ft 4.0-litre V6 and a 155bhp, 178lb ft 2.7-litre four-cylinder unit.

Its larger size means it’s more spacious inside than the outgoing model. It can seat seven and options include sat-nav, leather seats and a rear-view monitor.
