If you're sitting through this heatwave and had thought of taking a dip in the sea on Friday morning, you're not alone.
Maurizio Zanisi, a Milanese engineer, will be driving into the Channel at Folkestone in his self-adapted Panda Terramare 4. It was a Panda 4x4, but is now a floating car with a hovercraft-style flotation belt around it and waterjet propulsion from the rear axle.
He's taken it out on some Italian lakes and into the Med off Sardinia. But this will apparently be the Terramare's sternest test yet.
The plan is to arrive in France and then drive home to Rome.
