John Cooper Works has unleashed its race-prepared version of the 200bhp Mini Cooper S Works, together with details of the racing series owners will be able to compete in. Priced at £26,000, the track-ready hatch features a host of John Cooper Motorsport modifications, including racing seats, a roll cage, a stainless steel exhaust, and competition-standard suspension and brakes.

Buyers of the car will be given the chance to enter next season’s John Cooper Challenge, in which twelve of the new cars will line up against each other for the new S Class title, alongside eighteen of the 133bhp Clubsport Minis competing in the Club Class section that featured last season.

‘Given the great sporting heritage of the Cooper name, it was always our intention to introduce the Works Cooper S into racing as early as possible,’ said Mike Cooper, managing director of John Cooper Works. ‘The 2004 season should be the best yet.’

‘If past history is anything to go by, we can expect a gaggle of eager racers, challenging for every corner bumper-to-bumper, and smiling every second of the way. I have no doubts that the arrival of the Works Cooper S will merely move the action up a gear or two,’ he added.

After the car has been built and purchased, a full season of racing with the John Cooper Challenge costs £5,000 plus VAT, and features twelve rounds condensed into nine weekends, including a sprint, a hillclimb, nine UK track races, and one double-header in mainland Europe.
