Toyota's US youth brand tests the market for its three-seat supermini

Toyota's US youth brand Scion has unveiled a special concept version of the iQ supermini at the New York motor show.

Although the bright yellow concept car features some design flourishes, most notably widely flared wheelarches and larger 18-inch wheels, it is essentially a rebadged version of the iQ currently on sale in Europe and Japan.

It has been rebranded in the US as Toyota believes Scion's younger image is more likely to resonate with potential buyers.

"Traditionally small vehicles have been thought of as being basic," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "The iQ concept is just the opposite, with its innovative features and iconic urban design.

"Our young, trend-setting buyers are creative and innovative forward thinkers, and we think they will appreciate what iQ has to offer."

The Scion iQ is being displayed as a concept car in New York, and the company will judge public reaction before deciding whether to put it into production.
