A high-design estate derivative is on the cards for Volkswagen’s new flagship executive hatchback

Volkswagen will consider adding a pseudo-estate bodystyle to its new Arteon range if the car is as well received in European showrooms as it’s hoped, company sources have revealed.

The new Audi A5 Sportback-rivalling Arteon hatchback, which is expected in UK showrooms this October, will take Volkswagen into a part of the executive car market it hasn’t occupied since the Phaeton saloon was discontinued from UK sales in 2015.

It will launch with a choice of 276bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 237bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines, both of which will get 4Motion four-wheel drive and seven-speed DSG automatic gearboxes as standard. Volkswagen UK is yet to decide if any of the less powerful engine versions available elsewhere will be made available in the UK.

Pricing for the Arteon is expected to kick off at around £38,000.

Volkswagen Head of Product Line Elmar Licharz said: “It’s our intention to turn the Arteon into a model family. Right now, we have a proposal on the table for a stylish wagon version to compliment the hatchback. The car has not been confirmed for production yet, but it has a good chance.”

not a successful transformation

I love the design of the Arteon, but this shooting brake version is disappointing and loses its sleek and sporty look by adding a rather clumsy and droopy back end.
It looks more like an overgrown Jetta wagon that has been sitting too long under the sun.

But then again this is an Autocar illustration/speculation, which is not relevant until we see actual photos or official renderings.

Arteon Shooting Brake

So VW are now doing their own version of the Vauxhall/Opel Signum then are they? That's what it reminds me of from the side view if the "Autocar Exclusive" image is anywhere near accurate.

VW Arteon

Here we go again going boldly again into new territory dreamed up by the folks in VW's marketing department.So basically we're going to make the Passat CC into a model in it's own right,so we'll create a Passat with less room that cost's more,we don't care if it cannibalizes sales from our own Audi A5 either. An just to add that extra soupcon of stupidity we're going to make an absolutely pointless "lifestyle estate" that's going to cost at least £10K more than the entry level Merc CLA Shooting Brake. Yup works for me,there's no way this one can fail is there

Of course it won't fail the U.K. Is infatuated with a love of all things VAG for some bizarre reason..
