Currently reading: Jaguar reveals £1m Lightweight E-type

Six new Lightweight E-types are made to the original specification, complete with 3.8-litre straight six engines

Jaguar has unveiled the first of its reborn Lightweight E-types at the Pebble Beach Concours in California. Six units of the car will go on sale for an estimated £1 million apiece.

The new examples complete the ‘Special GT E-type’ project that was started in 1963. Just 12 of the planned 18-car original run were built. The remaining six chassis numbers are set to appear on the newly created examples.

Designed for racing, the Lightweight E-types will be built to the exact specification of the original cars, allowing them to be used in historic racing events.

Power comes from an aluminium-block 3.8-litre straight six engine, which turns out 335bhp and 280lb ft of torque. It drives through a four-speed manual gearbox and is based on the engine that powered the D-type to Le Mans victory in 1957.

Crucial to the E-type’s design is its lightweight aluminium bodyshell, which saves 114kg over the standard E-type. Jaguar engineers have decided to eschew modern construction methods, as used on the aluminium-bodied Jaguar F-Type and Jaguar XJ, in favour of the original techniques.

Inner and outer surfaces of the car were digitally scanned, with most body panels then being reproduced at Jaguar’s Whitley engineering centre. With the bodywork complete, the cars will be mated to the engine’s subframe before being transferred to the company’s Browns Lane site to be completed.

The Lightweight E-type features twin-wishbone suspension at the front and an independent wide-based wishbone set-up at the rear, tuned to perform best under racing conditions. The E-type’s rack and pinion steering is fitted and the car sits on 15-inch wheels. An aluminium hard-top is also included.

Inside, aluminium bucket seats feature in a functional-looking cabin, which has a wood-trimmed steering wheel and push-button starter.

The project is being overseen by Jaguar Heritage, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division. The car shown at Pebble Beach, a prototype model, has been dubbed Car Zero.

Jaguar design boss Ian Callum said: “With the Lightweight E-type, our focus as a design team has been to ensure justice was done to the original work of Sir William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer.

“I believe the result is a new Lightweight E-type that is as stunning now as the originals would have been when they were new.”

The trouble here is that some

The trouble here is that some people seem so unhealthily devoted to JLR to the point where if you say something negative about one of their products, you are accused of being a 'troll'. In fact, I was once accused of being a Nazi for stating that the S-Class is superior to the XF. Of course we all like different cars, and everyone's entitled to express their views on which ones they prefer, but the aggressive, petty and rude nature of one person on this site in particular (mentioning no names) towards anyone who doesn't think JLR is perfect in every way shows just how delusional he truly is. And his meaningless gibberish lets down those who are trying to debate the same side of the argument eloquently and sensibly.

Jaguar needs to focus

Despite what others say, I don't hate J; I only hate what they are doing by focusing on this when the F-Type is already dead in showrooms. For instance, the F-type already occupies positions 1,3 and 5 in list of Top 10 slowest-selling cars in the USA. That's terrible for a car just 1 year old......that's why I hate Jag, doing this - the need to focus!

Ah, Soldi, Soldi, another 'fact-based" discussion...

If you go to
goodcarbadcar.net/2014/08/usa-auto-sales-rankings-by-make-model-july-2014-ytd-sales-figures.html
then you'll see that the ten worst selling cars were:
#259 Chevrolet Avalanche 82 13,374 -99.4% --- 1496 -100%
#260 Chevrolet Colorado 73 3241 -97.7% --- 207 -100%
#261 Volvo C30 64 1098 -94.2% --- 142 -100%
#262 Acura ZDX 63 277 -77.3% 7 41 -82.9%
#263 Mercedes-Benz B-Class 41 10 310% 41 2 1950%
#264 Lexus LFA 12 17 -29.4% --- --- ---
#265 Mercedes-Benz R-Class 6 27 -77.8% --- 4 -100%

#267 Porsche 918 Spyder 4 --- 3 --- ---
#268 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class 2 --- --- --- ---
Not a Jaguar, let alone an F-Type in sight...
I've given up expecting an apology for your complete inability to perform simple research.

Profits and J and LR stand at

Profits and J and LR stand at 27/73%, yes Land Rover make more profits, they have more cars to sell, Soldi seems intent on splitting JLR up into the two seperate businesses, yet they are not, it is ONE with two distict lines of products, like Mercedes, Smart and its Comemrical vehicles, they are all under one banner..........................

if you really want to not look like a tool, as someone else quite eloquently put it, then why dont you find out the sales figures for eachh Jag specific model and its Mercedes direct competitor, the same for BMW and AUDI, as for the rest of us, the company makes significant profits, better than the majority of other brands, a nice success story....................................

But unfortunately a nice success story is not what some like to see, the prefer to deride, slag off and genereally put down the company, however, your the ones that look stupid, becasue you faill to understand simple maths..........................

I, on the other hand, an really pleased with how J and LR are doing, am happy to put MY money where my mouth is and order a new XE, and will be more than happy to discuss it sensibly with those that have noulterior motives....
