Survey highlights the need for clear, consistent data as the market grows

Car makers and the government are being advised to provide clearer information about electric vehicles after a recent study showed 38% of drivers know little or nothing about how much they cost to run.

The survey of 2200 UK adults, conducted for World EV Day, suggested attitudes towards electric vehicles were generally positive. Two thirds (64%) of drivers said they would consider an EV for their next car. Less than half said the same about diesel.

Running costs (excluding the cost of the vehicle itself) were the top priority for car buyers. In the survey, 91% said running costs were an important factor when choosing their next vehicle, and this was slightly higher (93%) among potential EV drivers, outranking environmental benefits, range and convenient refuelling or recharging.

Running costs are a crucial consideration because the difference in them between cars can be stark. According to manufacturer figures, the Vauxhall Corsa-e costs £107 less in monthly running costs than its petrol-powered twin.

However, 53% of drivers said choosing an electric vehicle was confusing, and only 26% who are considering getting one expected running costs to be lower than for a petrol or diesel car. 

The results highlight some significant knowledge gaps. Less than half of those surveyed (47%) expected electric vehicles to offer a tax saving, despite EVs qualifying for zero-rate vehicle excise duty (regardless of list price) and an ultra-low 2% company car tax band, compared with at least 25% for petrol or diesel models.

Even among those who said running costs were an important factor, 23% didn’t know whether electric vehicles’ servicing and maintenance costs were lower, 15% were unsure if they avoided clean air zone charges, 14% were unaware of tax incentives, and 13% didn’t know how the cost of electricity compared with petrol or diesel costs.

Drivers also reported struggling with other important information. Range was the third most common influence on vehicle choice, with two thirds (65%) of drivers noting that this was improving and 44% adding that they could do most journeys on a single charge. 

However, almost half (46%) said published data was hard to understand, and this was even higher among those who had researched electric vehicles in detail (58%) or already drive one (59%). 

In turn, 50% expected to get less than the manufacturers’ stated range, and 56% said that this would put them off getting an electric vehicle altogether.

Neill Emmett, head of marketing at LeasePlan UK and the study’s project lead, said: “Most EV models work out cheaper than diesel or petrol cars due to the lower whole-life costs.

“We urgently need greater access to more financially attainable vehicles [and] continue to educate people about the cheaper running costs of an EV – even in the current economic environment – to tackle many of the common misconceptions we’re seeing.”

Is anyone surprised by this? Last year I went into a vw dealer because company car list was out and it had the id3 and id4 on there. I asked the salesman loads of questions like this and was told "he didn't know and to go online and research myself".

so I did, and it was complicated and confusing but I got there. Biggest cost issues is the difference between charging at home or out on the charging network. At home makes it a lot cheaper, but lots of people don't have access to home charging, and are unfairly penalised for that. BBC ran an article recently that the price to charge at the super rapid, or whatever they're called, chargers was nearly the same cost per mile as petrol

Electric cars are still too fancy, with difficult to use touch screens; most are unnecessary SUV and only ONE is an estate. Overall that makes them too expensive.
Also most have ridiculously fast 0-60 times.

 So, the zero Road Tax, where in future will the Government get the billions it brought in every year to replace it?, nobody seems to have said how.

Road Tax isn't much more than a token tax anyway. Drivers think a few £100 pays for all of the road building and maintenance. It really doesn't.

I'd expect in the future we will be paying by miles traveled. It's not that difficult and it's fair. Use the roads more then you should pay more.

Don't expect any answers from this Government. They don't know what they're doing on a week by week basis.

If you want to know about EVs go talk to an owner. My car has 1/10 the fuel bill of the car it replaced. Cheaper maintenance and servicing. Zero Road Tax. And easy to drive.
