Audi diesel racer wins on debut

Audi's campaign to win Le Mans with a diesel sportscar got off to the best possible start last weekend, when the new R10 won on its race debut in the United States.

Driven by Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen, the R10 won the 12 Hours of Sebring, the opening round of the American Le Mans Series and an important pointer towards form for the French 24-hour classic.

The winning car had to start the race from the pitlane after Audi had to replace a heat exchanger after qualifying. But it took the lead after two hours and dominated thereafter. The other R10 TDI, driven by Marco Werner, Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro, led initially but was forced out before half-distance with overheating.

It wasn't such a good race for Aston Martin, however - its DBR9 started as favourite for a class win but was defeated by Corvette.
