New Honda Civic Type R targets a Nurburgring lap record for front-wheel drive cars

Bosses says the next-generation Honda Civic Type R will become the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the Nürburgring.

Speaking at the Frankfurt motor show, Honda also confirmed the hot Civic will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine developing "at least" 276bhp.

Honda confirmed the news as it confirmed former British Touring Car champion and current Honda World Touring Car driver, Gabriele Tarquini has been involved in the development of the car at the Nürburgring.

The Nürburgring's front-wheel drive record currently standas a 8min 7.97sec, set by a Megane Renaultsport 265. 

President of Honda Motor Europe Manubu Nishimae said: "“We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.” 

The car has previously been spotted testing at the circuit.
