Currently reading: Jaguar XF S Sportbrake spotted testing in the UK

Estate version of Jaguar’s BMW 5 Series rival will be offered with six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines

A Jaguar XF S Sportbrake development car has been spotted testing in the UK ahead of the model’s official reveal later this year.

The S version of Jaguar’s sports estate will sit above the regular XF Sportbrake, which has been confirmed for production, and make use of the same turbocharged petrol and diesel engines as the saloon.

The images, which surfaced on various social media users' feeds, also show that the car bears the model's production name, hashtagged, presumably in order to raise awareness of the car's impending launch.

Both the engines are turbocharged 3.0-litre V6s. The petrol’s headline figure is a 375bhp output, while the diesel has a claimed combined economy figure of 51.4mpg .

The units will be unchanged from those found in the XF S saloon and mated to the same eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Expect all of the running gear to be carried over, although the car’s rear suspension may feature adjustable settings in order to cater for its slightly heavier back end.

The rear-wheel-drive estate’s strongest asset compared with its saloon sibling will be increased rear head room and boot space. The additional weight might mean the estate's 0-62mph sprint time is down on that of the XF S saloon, which covers the benchmark sprint in 5.3sec in its petrol-engined form.

While no official date has been mentioned, sources suggest the XF S Sportbrake could have its debut alongside the XF Sportbrake later this year.

Sales would likely kick-off in the summer, with the Sportbrake's price pushing above that of XF S saloon, which starts at £49,995.

XE Estate?

Great to see the XF estate get ready, hope it adds a new demographic to the potential buyer universe for the XF.

Are JLR not doing an XE estate as well? Seems short sighted not to. Our roads are full of A4 / C-Class / 3 series estates, and I am sure XE estates can help expand overall XE sales.

Only one to beat

If you can find anything that touches the Audi Allroad let me know!! Meanwhile was given a lift in the saloon version with diesel power 3 litre. I was shocked and extremely disappointed to learn that this engine is in fact a peugeot engine which Jag tweak and pretty up and present as a Jag engine...hmmmmm not for me then thanks. The iPace will have a bespoke set of motors to thrust you in silence - and it is very beautiful too. Waiting on the corner to see one soon

You're right JLR do have there own 'unique' developments to the unit, but I believe it's a Ford unit, jointly developed between themselves, PSA and JLR.

The main user of the engine

The main user of the engine all along has been JLR anyway. It's mainly a Ford/JLR design, with little PSA input, built in Dagenham. I'm pretty sure no current PSA models or Ford Europe use the engine, as they've no need of a 3L V6 diesel engine now.

Well, when I drove one, that engine was pretty nice. Of course Jaguar want to get away from relying on 3rd parties for engines. That's why they are developing a 6 cylinder Ingenium. These days, more 4 cylinders are bought, which, no doubt, is why they started with that.
