Morgan has announced that a race-inspired version of the Aero 8 will be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March - the Aero GT.
On the exterior, aerodynamic tweaks mark the car out from the standard Aero 8, making it a more extreme version of Morgan’s modern retro-styled car. The eight-unit production run will be the final eight cars produced as Morgan discontinues the model.
Despite the race inspiration, the Aero GT will be a road car, with increased downforce and reduced drag a result of the aerodynamic tweaks. These include louvres on the front wings and a diffuser that the brand describes as "drastic".
The “gloves off” GT, as the company describes it, will feature a high level of bespoke features, meaning prices will vary across the eight units. They are likely to far exceed the £94,665 on-the-road price for the Aero 8.
The same 4.8-litre BMW V8 engine in the Aero 8 powers the Aero GT. With 367bhp on tap, the engine gives a top speed of 170mph and acceleration from 0-62mph in 4.5sec. The naturally aspirated BMW engine also dies with the Aero 8’s passing.
Rival Wiesmann recently announced its resurrection, but it will be using turbocharged engines shared with the new M5.
The Aero 8 was first revealed at the Geneva motor show in 2000. With an aluminium construction and more modern styling compared with its classic-styled stablemates, it heralded a new era of cars at Morgan. “The Aero range has always offered Morgan the platform to explore the boundaries of mechanical and styling design and I am delighted the family has allowed one of our wildest ideas to become a reality,” said head of design Jon Wells.

Back or front?
It struck me that the teaser pic at the top could be the rear arch of a new mid-engined supercar.
Much nicer as the front arch of a Morgan.
