Double F1 world champion and Woking F1 team announce end of their relationship

Double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he will leave McLaren at the end of the season, after only one year of his three-year contract with the team. The Spaniard's relationship with the team had deteriorated in the second half of the season, culminating in a row with McLaren boss Ron Dennis at the Hungarian Grand Prix, when Alonso threatened to go to the FIA with fresh information concerning McLaren's alleged use of Ferrari design documents. However, despite hinting strongly earlier in the year that he felt he was not receiving the same equipment as his team-mate, Alonso said today, "people say a lot of things in the heat of battle, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win. Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out. I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team."Red Bull and Toyota are among the teams chasing Alonso's signature for 2008 and beyond, but his most likely option is said to be a return to the Renault team that brought him his two driver's titles. Finn Heikki Kovalainen could leave the French team to make way for Alonso, perhaps swapping seats to join Lewis Hamilton at McLaren for 2008.
