Mustang returns

The most iconic of Ford’s brands is heading back to the race track. This 440bhp 5.0-litre V8 Mustang GT-R concept will be revealed at this week’s New York Motor Show, but Ford has conceived its ‘road racer’ to meet the regulations for several top-flight GT race series.

Although officially a concept to celebrate the Mustang’s 40th birthday on 17 April, Ford has confirmed it built the car to FIA GT and American Le Mans championship specification. Power comes from the existing 5.0-litre Cammer crate engine, which private racers can buy as a stand-alone engine from Ford Racing for $14,995 (£8115).

Ford claims that 85 per cent of the production Mustang’s body components are shared with the racing concept, as well as the suspension set-up.
