French car firm applies mild cosmetic upgrades and new engines to C4 hatchback

Citroën's updated C4 family hatchback will be priced from £14,645 when it arrives in UK dealers in April.

The facelifted Citroen C4 hatchback receives nip and tuck upgrades, new cabin materials and new Euro6-compliant engines - two three-cylinder petrols and three four-cylinder diesel units with optional stop-start engine technology.

The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol PureTech 110 unit in six-speed manual form puts out 108bhp at 5500rpm and 151lb ft at 1750rpm. Combined fuel economy is said to be 60.1mpg while emitting 110g/km of CO2.

In BlueHDi 100 and 120 tune, the 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine develops 98bhp at 3750rpm and 118bhp at 3500rpm respectively, with respective torque outputs of 187lb ft and 221lb ft, produced at 1750rpm in each case. With stop-start, Citroën says the BlueHDi 120 delivers combined fuel economy of 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 98g/km.

The flagship motor is a 2.0-litre turbodiesel BlueHDi 150, developing 147bhp at 44000rpm and 272lb ft at 2000rpm. It also returns 74.3mpg and emits 98g/km with stop-start.

The C4's dimensions remain the same at 4330mm long, 1790mm wide and 1490mm high. Boot space remains the class-leader in its segment, at 408 litres.

A choice of nine colours will be available on the new C4 range, with the exterior adorned with new headlights and LEDs, which add "expression” to the look, according to Citroën. There are also touches of chrome on the front and rear bumpers, and updated interior materials.

Buyers get the choice of three new trim levels - Touch, Feel and Flair. Entry-level Touch trim gets 16in steel wheels, air conditioning, cruise control and body-coloured bumpers.

Mid-range Feel trim adds newly designed 17in alloy wheels, DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity and driver's seat lumbar adjustment. Top-spec Flair gains a 7.0in touchscreen with sat-nav and media, rear parking sensors, front fog lights and tinted rear windows.

Soft leather on the dashboard and chrome inserts on the steering wheel controls, air vents and gear lever accentuate the updated interior touches.

Safety features on the facelifted C4 include keyless entry and start, hill start assist, lane departure warning system and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The 2015 Citroën C4 is priced from £14,645 for the PureTech 110 petrol Touch, rising to £20,045 for the flagship 2.0-litre BlueHDi 150 diesel Flair model.

Citroën C4
The Citroën C4 range comprises three diesel and three petrol engines, plus three trim levels

It's an admirable family hatchback, but there is an abundance of superior rivals that makes the C4 feel a little outclassed

Will remain under most buyer's radar

The DS4, although less practical and more expensive, is a much better looking car. As for the 'healthy sales' of the C4 Cactus, Im have only seen 2 on the road so far.

Id be tempted if they put a decent efficient auto (im not inluding the dreadful EGTS) with a 2.0 HDI option. Their current tq converter auto is both slower and horrifically thirstier than the manual at the moment which compared to any German rival is woefully out of date.

The auto's are all bought of the shelf from ZF and AISIN so why not put a new one in.

Poor Citroen. Back in the 90's a Citroen ZX was a car considered as a worthy rival to a Focus. Now the C4 is no where on most people's radar, they would rather have a Golf, a Leon or a Korean equivalent

Cactus taken over?

I guess at least the Cactus is appearing on some of those radars instead, judging by the sales figures. The Cactus is outperforming the DS4 at the moment.
