BMW 530e iPerformance mates a 181bhp four-cylinder petrol engine to a 94bhp electric motor, and has claimed fuel economy of 141mpg

The new BMW 530e iPerformance has been revealed, ahead of going on sale in mid-January.

BMW has released full specs of the car following the reveal of the new 5 Series, including pricing, fuel economy and emissions; the 530e starts at £43,985. BMW claims that the car can achieve 141.2mpg; nearly 50% up on the Toyota Prius’s claimed 94.1mpg. Emissions are 46g/km, according to BMW.

A total power output of 276bhp from the 181bhp four-cylinder petrol engine and supplementary 94bhp electric motor equates to a 0-62mph sprint of 6.2sec, while top speed is 146mph. The peak torque for the car is 310lb ft.

The 530e has an electric-only range of up to 29 miles, which can be used at up to 87mph, while total range is ‘nearly’ 400 miles in real-world conditions. As a plug-in hybrid, charging takes under five hours from a standard socket, and under three hours from a BMW’s i Wallbox. Due to the battery pack, bootspace in the 530e saloon is reduced from the standard car’s 530 litres to 410.

Six drive modes are available on the 530e; Sport, Comfort, Eco Pro, Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Battery control. The first three are available on the standard 5 Series, but the second batch, switchable with an eDrive button.

Auto eDrive is the car’s default setting, and uses both powertrains in sync with one another. Max eDrive allows electric-only driving, until heavy acceleration causes the internal combustion engine to cut in. Battery control lets the driver select how much battery capacity to reserve, should they require electric-only mileage at a later stage in the journey.

The car is marked out by blue exterior highlights in the grille and on the wheels, exterior badging and the charge socket, placed between the A-pillar and wheel arch on the near side. eDrive badges feature on the door sills.

Deliveries of the 530e iPerformance are expected to commence in late March 2017, while BMW expects the 530e to make up about 15% of all 5 Series sales during the new model's first full year. Currently, there are no plans for an estate variant of the 530e hybrid.

I hope they're working on

a 3.0 6cyl PHEV version. I couldn't bring myself to buy a premium car (even a 3 series) with 4-pot. Not about the power, about the delivery and feel.

EU test

The EU test has acceleration and different running speeds I guess some of these push the car out of EV only mode. As always you will have an individual score. I've always liked the presence a 5 series gives.
