Ford’s tweaked Mustang gets all the new tech and a 10-speed auto added to the coupé, as well as a crisp new look for both the coupé and convertible models

The 2018 Ford Mustang will be faster and more economical when it arrives in Britain next year with the addition of a new 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Available in both coupé and convertible forms, the car's new gearbox is claimed to improve shift times over its predecessor, as well as offering different settings for the three drive modes. It’s controllable with paddle-shifters, too.

The car will produce more power from its 5.0-litre V8 engine and there could also be gains for the 2.3-litre Ecoboost version, if the 'to be determined' power outputs on a leaked US specs list (see gallery - from the Mustang6g forum) are anything to go by. The current 2.3-litre model has 312bhp and the V8 has 410bhp.

Ford also claims that better fuel economy is achieved. Tweaks to the clutch of the V8’s six-speed manual gearbox increase torque, too.

In addition to tweaked front and rear styling – which Ford claims offer aerodynamic benefits - new, all-LED headlight units and three new paint colours, the Mustang gets a digital display to replace the traditional dials of the outgoing model. Ford showed the same function in the GT supercar earlier this year, with a similar level of personalisation features on the Mustang.

Under the skin, Ford has upgraded the shock absorbers, claiming an improvement in ride quality, and has also fitted a new cross-axis joint and tweaked the stabiliser bars. All of these, Ford claims, improve handling. Buyers who pick the Mustang Performance Package will now benefit from Ford’s Magneride adaptive dampers, too. Exhaust note can be modified by adding the active valve exhaust option.

After the outgoing Mustang achieved a dire two-star Euro NCAP rating, Ford is now including pre-collision systems and pedestrian detection on the Mustang. Standard kit now also includes a memory function on the car’s computer system, which saves your preferred drive settings, such as tweaks made to the steering and suspension.

The Ford Mustang is available in the UK in right-hand drive for the first time, but does the rest of this American muscle car fit the UK car scene?

Ford has also extended its Fordpass smartphone app to be compatible on the Mustang, so owners can unlock, lock, find and start their Mustang with their phone.

Specifications for the facelifted Mustang will be revealed this autumn and the first cars will arrive in the UK at the beginning of 2018. Expect a small increase in price; entry-level cars will likely top £32,000.

Sensational!

Ford has somehow made a brilliant, class leading car even better, and before the competition even caught up to the existing model. I don't know how they keep on doing it, but they do. Well done, Ford.

Oh dear!

The Mustang was always going to have a hard time once the steering wheel swapped sides, the looks are polarising, the fronts just OK the rear needs work, interior?,well let's just say not up to European standards at this price band,engines?......falling into the clutches of high powered Hatchbacks,I'm talking Mercedes,Ford's on Focus RS,even Seat,so maybe 410bhp should be the starting engine power level?,and even suppose that makes them a few grand dearer they should still sell,oh!,and make them handle better too!

Its been having a really hard time apparently... When I ordered mine the dealer said they hadn't had any interest at all. Strange that I had to wait 13 months for it..... I never could understand....

Wake up Pal !

400+ BHP, more kit and all for the same price as a 2.0 A5 - is it even a choice?

Perhaps its just me, I've never been inclined to stroke the interior materials.

Dare I say it is just as popular,as common as....the MG6, if it was a sure fire hit at a bargain price, the Car Mags rave on how good they are,how come they are as rocking Horse poo!, I'm not saying they are bad Cars,it's just they are not selling......why?

Peter, Ford have an allowance of RHD cars, every one they can bring in is sold. No discount, and the reason people wait 13 months isnt to save up, or because they are deciding to buy this or an MG6, its because thats how long the waiting list is. If you havent seen one, maybe you need to get out more. If you speak really nicely to your local Ford dealer they might even let you have a go it their demonstrator, and i suspect your mind will change. But even if it doesnt, lets just celebrate a bit more choice out there. Surely no one can object to that?

I have seen three in a Year, about the same as the MG6,I am not comparing the Cars abilities it's the rarity,Ford maybe keeping ports of the Mustang down, selling them to order maybe(?),it's a Car that deserves to succeed but I just thing the base engine is a bit weedy compared to some of the current Hot Hatches from VW,Ford (RS),Mercedes,Seat just to name four.

The reason they are not selling more is that the quantity being imported is being tightly controlled. Partly to help residual values, but mainly because if they suddenly started selling a thousands of 5.0 cars, the EU environmentalists would whine too much.

Just need sensible emissions rules now

As the v8 delivers the same real world economy as a Focus RS we just need the government to stop these daft taxes based on a floored emissions regulatory regime. A friend has one of the new BMW hybrids, does he get the claimed 142mpg, no he gets 42mpg. It really is a nonsense.

As for the mustang, I quite like it, it seems like a good car is getting better.
