Currently reading: 9-3 is first for hot new V6

Saab plans to drop a 280bhp turbocharged version of a new quad-cam 2.8-litre V6 into its 9-3, making it the most powerful roadgoing Saab ever. The new engine will be announced at the same time as next summer’s all-new 9-3 Sporthatch estate (based on last year’s concept car, above), but will also be offered in saloon (right) and cabriolet bodystyles.

In the 9-3, the single-turbo V6 will develop ‘280bhp plus’ and will be mated to either six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearboxes. The V6, to be built at the rate of close to half a million a year, will be offered with multi-point and direct injection, producing between 200-370bhp and 190-350lb ft of torque.

It will be used across GM’s global family, including Alfa Romeo, Vauxhall and Saab.
