Seat had a mini world premiere at Birmingham: the petrol version of its fastest Ibiza, the Cupra. The 178bhp Cupra 20V T turbocharged petrol will cost £15,500 and goes on sale at the end of the year. Its diesel sibling, the 158bhp diesel Cupra TDi, arrives first in July and costs £16,000.

The Spanish firm’s new Altea will undercut all its main MPV rivals when sales start in July. At £12,850, the Altea Reference 1.6 comes in £340 below the Ford Focus C-Max, £263 under the entry Renault Scenic and an unsurprising £1645 under its sister version from VW, the Touran. The top-spec Altea Sport 2.0 TDi with VW’s paddle-shift DSG gearbox comes in at £17,600.
