Ferrari replaces the 575M with the 599 GTB

Ferrari looks to be presenting a more coherent front with the 599 GTB than it did with the 550 and 575 Maranellos.

The 599 continues the tradition of preceding V12 Berlinettas with its front-mounted 611bhp 5999cc engine, directly derived from the Enzo's V12. By a strange twist the V12 in the four-seater 612 Scaglietti is derived from the unit in the 599's predecessor, the 575M.

Though weight, dimensions and price are not yet known- they will be by the February launch at Geneva - the 599 is shorter than the 612 and looks somewhat tauter.

It is a strict two-seater and has a stance that places it appropriately between the F430 and the 612. Squinting at the photos shows a diffuser at the rear and a manetino control on the steering wheel - hinting that the F430's e-diff has been adapted to fit the 599. The sloping wings and controversial styling are very reminiscent of the 612's.

The brake discs filling those five-star alloys are carbon ceramic with 6 pot calipers, likely to be standard-fit when the car goes on sale later this year.
