Official picture shows Lexus LF-Ch concept car

This is the first glimpse of Lexus’s premium hatchback, a rival for the Audi A3 that is due in the UK late next year.

A concept version of the car - called the LF-Ch - will make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month. Lexus has issued a single image of this car (above).

See the Lexus Frankfurt motor show picture gallery.

Details on the five-door concept car are scarce, beyond the fact that it is a hybrid that can be driven in an electric-only mode.

Lexus is keen to get a foothold in the C-segment premium market, which has so far been dominated by cars like the A3 and BMW 1-series.

A Lexus source told Autocar a production version of the car - with both hybrid and conventional drivetrains - has now been given the green light. Although Lexus saloons are generally rear-wheel drive, this model is likely to be front-wheel drive, like the Audi.

Lexus will also show its revised LS, GS and IS ranges at Frankfurt.

The LS features exterior and interior revisions, including suspension updates.

The GS range includes enhanced safety systems and choices of new exterior and interior colours.

A refreshed IS model range inccludes navigation and audio system upgrades, and a new F Sport trim package. The IS-F will now be available with a limited-slip differential.

Pictures of all these cars can be seen in the Lexus Frankfurt picture gallery.

From the pictures provided, which rear door handle?! Seems like entry for rear passengers is through the window!! We've all seen these "pencil" style rear view mirrors on pre-production models, but still to see a production vehicle with such mirrors fitted and the issue of how the manufacturer will implement the visual displays for the mirrors...

I can't help automatically thinking of the Seat Leon, with that hidden rear door handle and roof line.

Although the colour shown there looks very Vauxhall Astra-esque.

Looks quite good for a Japanese car :-)
