Currently reading: Golf beats Focus to top sales spot

The VW Golf was Europe’s top-selling car in the first half of 2004 with 288,564 registrations, quashing rumours of slow sales once and for all. The Ford Focus, the UK’s dominant force, couldn’t even scrape into the top five. Peugeot’s 206 and 307 were placed second and third in front of the Renault Clio and Mégane, according to new figures from analyst JATO.

Jaguar recorded the biggest year-on-year growth while Toyota took the biggest increase in market share. The fastest-growing segment was mini/midi-MPVs, which grew to 8.6 per cent of the total market, while superminis took the largest share with more than 30 per cent.
