Lamborghini is planning an all-roads competition programme for its front-engined four-wheel-drive Urus but won’t yet reveal where the turbocharged V8-powered model will compete. Sources say an announcement is likely towards the end of this year, once Urus production has hit its stride at Sant’Agata.

The company denies that it will follow Bentley, which has just revealed plans to run a Bentley Bentayga at the famous Pike’s Peak International Hill climb in Colorado, although it acknowledges that Bentley’s performance “will provide us with a benchmark”.
“Lamborghini welcomes challenges, but whatever we do will be quite different from other brands,” said CEO Stefano Domenicali. "We will choose a form of competition intended only for our class of vehicle. Our car has many faces. You can enjoy its beauty, it is very fast on the track, very fast off road and very fast on gravel. We will choose something that combines all of these things.”
The Urus and Bentayga plans contrast those seen elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group; those have centred on using motorsport to illustrate the company’s growing environmental focus. The VW brand recently announced it would field an all-electric ID R prototype at this year's Pikes Peak, while late last year the company’s motorsport boss Wolfgang Dürheimer backed plans for an electric rallycross series that could run as a support event for Formula E.

Of course, you can't have VW, Audi, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini all competing in the same event, the VW might win. Perhaps they'll run something like the Transsyberia thing in which Cayenne’s came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd which sounded great until you realised that two thirds of the field were Cayenne’s. Porsche managed to spin off a Transsyberia special edition of that less than glorious victory. Never run a PR event unless you are sure of the outcome…
