New performance version of Audi's second-generation Q5 SUV will get a 3.0-litre V6 petrol motor

Audi is preparing to extend its RS performance car line-up with a new 450bhp-plus range-topping version of the upcoming second-generation Q5, sources close to the German car maker have revealed.

Planned to be introduced during the second half of 2017, the Q5 RS is being developed by Audi’s Quattro performance car division at its headquarters in Neckarsulm, Germany alongside the fourth-generation RS4 and second-generation Audi RS5, with which it will share its engine, dual clutch S tronic gearbox and Torsen torque-sensing four-wheel drive system.

The new Q5 RS forms an integral part of plans that chairman Rupert Stadler says will enable Audi to increase its presence in the performance SUV ranks in coming years.

“We’ve identified increasing demand for performance-based SUVs in all of our key global markets. When we launched the RS Q3 we expected it to do well, but the sales have topped our expectations. We think we can build on this with a larger and more powerful model,” he said.

The Q5 RS is planned to run the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine set to be unveiled in the new RS4 and RS5 due out later this year.

The newly developed engine will replace Quattro’s naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 petrol powerplant, with a claimed output to match that of the competition package recently announced for the BMW M3 and M4 at more than 450bhp.

The Q5 RS will be assembled alongside other Q5 models at Audi's new $1.3 billion manufacturing plant in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico.

The Audi Q5 – the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer's rival to the Land Rover Freelander – may not be perfect, but it is a well rounded road-biased off-roader

But does it have?

THIS from its close neighbours is so good it should be considered as a standard part as much as an engine and seat..needed by 90% of ladies (sorry girls) and 70% of men (guys could do a lot better too)

This would be useful for everyone. Parking is often the most tedious bit. Now, if the car could find its own parking place and then park itself...

Look how close it parks to

Look how close it parks to the car on the right then how it's magically moved a couple of feet to the left when the man returns. Why didn't it reverse in? Much safer and then he can drive it out himself.

I can see it being valuable in certain circumstances as it relies on your eyes to judge when it's safe to manoeuvre but otherwise it's a bit gimmicky.

Presumably Macan 2 will share

Presumably Macan 2 will share this platform. Does this mean that the current Macan will be replaced after only 4 or 5 years, or will they launch it later in the Q5 life cycle?

Platform the same

The current Macan is already on this platform - I guess the idea is for the Porsche to have the cutting edge tech for a bit before they bring it out in the lesser brands.
