Currently reading: New five-door Porsche Cayenne coupe planned

More sporting crossover planned as part of expanded Cayenne SUV family, and one of seven new VW Group SUVs

Porsche is planning to expand its Porsche Cayenne SUV line-up with a uniquely styled coupé model. Design proposals for the new five-door liftback are described as already being at an advanced phase.

The Cayenne coupé, as the model has been christened in its development, will be positioned as a more sporting alternative to the regular Cayenne. It will receive a range of petrol and diesel engines, together with plug-in petrol-electric and diesel-electric hybrid powertrains, Porsche insiders have confirmed.

It is one of up to seven new SUVs set to be developed on a new version of the VW Group’s MLB platform currently being engineered by Audi

Tentatively scheduled for introduction in 2018 as part of the third-generation Cayenne line-up, the Cayenne coupé has been conceived as a rival to the growing number of sporting, upmarket crossover-style vehicles, including the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz MLC and Range Rover Sport.

"We have been considering launching a more sporting derivative of the Cayenne for some time now," a senior Porsche official revealed. "The problem has been the production capacity at our Leipzig factory and the strong sales of the regular Cayenne."

It is also understood that Porsche is concerned about preserving the exclusivity of its Porsche 911, Cayman and Boxster sports cars as it expands its SUV range. This will be a factor in whether the model gets the final production go-ahead, although approval does seem likely at present.

With further investment set to increase production capacity at the Leipzig plant when the third-generation Cayenne arrives in 2017, company boss Matthias Müller has brought the coupé variant of Porsche’s strongest-selling model into its new model development programme.

The coupé’s styling will be an evolution of that seen on today’s second-generation Cayenne, a facelift for which is imminent before the third-generation model arrives in 2017. Expect the Cayenne coupé to adopt an edgier look with tauter surfacing and overall styling inspired by the 918 Spyder, as our artist’s impression reveals. A sleeker roofline, narrow glasshouse and sloping rear end will help to differentiate it from the regular Cayenne SUV.

The interior will be shared with the new Cayenne, which again will be heavily influenced by the 918 Spyder hypercar.

The Cayenne coupé is set to be priced around 15 to 20 per cent higher than the current Cayenne, suggesting an entry-level price of around £50,000 for a 3.0-litre petrol V6 variant. As with the current Cayenne, an extensive model range is expected to include GTS, Turbo and Diesel variants, with the range being crowned by a twin-turbocharged petrol V8 with more than 550bhp in the Turbo S.

The chassis is set to be honed at the Nürburgring, with Porsche keen to push the Cayenne coupé’s sporting intentions. It will be lower overall and have a lower ride height than the Cayenne on which it is based, with the intention of giving the more road-focused model a lower centre of gravity.

Superb, but they must size the PHEV battery right this time !

The look of this Cayenne coupé is just Wonderful. Plus I understand it may come on day 1 with a "PHEV drive train of the future", although again positioned too high for me, like on the Panamera PHEV set above the 6 x cylinders Turbo at far too high > €130K price range, where there are very little buyers left... and still likely set with a far too small battery pack <10KWH (Ridiculous compared to TESLA packs of 65 and 85 KWH !), that does not allow to match my 1st PHEV requirement that is to be able to do ALL my 65-100KM of daily local commutes with no more than one charge per 24H, easy to secure at home during the night. So a good quality 3000 x cycles battery pack can last # 10 years, versus (un-acceptable) only 5 years if 2 x charges par day are required, or (ideal) 20 years plus a lot more comfort if one charge every 2 x days could be possible. One charge per day requires at least 12 to 18KWH in my view with normal Porsche driving style and air conditioning and everything on. For one every 2 x days they would need to put 30KWH as in the small Bolloré AutoLib full EVs in Paris. Below 12KWH I will just forget it.
For this Cayenne Coupé I have ZERO hope to be able to buy its PHEV model in my "all inclusive" €76K maxi Budget (That requires a base model at same €60K as for current Macan S). So my hope is that for next year MACAN PHEV Posche goes for a different "Mainstream PHEV luxury SUV" positionning on the model of the Audi TT OffRoad presented last month in China show : Based on 4 x cylinders, but with >12KWH battery and clever dual electric motors setting, ... Then Porsche should price it giving 4 Cylinders PHEV (with a good battery) at the SAME €60K w/ VAT starting Price of current 6 x Cylinders Macan Models S (making €76K all inclusive final price w/ options and Eco taxes that enough people can buy). This could be the TOP CHOICE PHEV SUV for the new large green cities SUV customers (like me in Paris, held by Greens teaming with Socialists) who will not be able to drive into their main city core center with any SUV that is not Plug In and fit with decent battery range tomorrow... We're getting so closed to make this future possible.... Just one more effort Porsche !

Cayennster

What next to hail from Porschistan? Cayenne Speedster with folding metal roof anyone? A Cayenne 4-door convertible would be the final joke to raise both Ferry and Ferdinand from their graves ...

Porsche SUVs up until now

Porsche SUVs up until now have been well judged. Yes they are overwhelmingly bought by urban dwellers who buy for image rather than utility, but at least they are spacious and capable off road. The Macan has a slightly smaller boot than the Q5 but still pretty practical. Looks like they are abandoning that now though...

How do you know? What evidence is there for this?
