This Renault Grand Scenic-based mule is the first evidence of Renault-Nissan’s all-new Common Module Family (CMF) system architecture. Autocar understands today’s Grand Scenic will be replaced by a seven-seat Crossover-style vehicle which — judging by this mule — is probably 24 months away from being showroom ready.
This early prototype — which uses a production body over the CMF running gear — reveals that the Grand Scenic replacement will have a much wider track, but is likely to be only marginally longer.
Renault has already said that the Espace replacement will be much more of a crossover-style vehicle, leaving the conventional MPV format behind. However, sources have told Autocar that the new Espace is unlikely to come to the UK, making the Grand Scenic replacement Renault’s flagship model in the UK.
The CMF architecture will be used for a total of 11 future Renault models, including the next-generation Laguna. Nissan has admitted that it will use the CMF for three crossover models: the Nissan X-Trail, the Nissan Qashqai and the Rogue, the US-market version of the Qashqai.
