SsangYong reveals new details about its SUV, set to go on sale before the end of the year

SsangYong has released official launch details about its new Rexton W SUV.

Set to go on sale in the UK this winter, the Rexton W will be priced from £21,995, rising to £25,995 for a top-spec model. 

It'll be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine providing 153bhp and 266lb ft of torque. The engine can be coupled to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive can be engaged by the driver.

The Rexton W uses double wishbone and coil spring suspension at the front, and a five-link rigid axle with coil springs at the rear.

The inside of the Rexton W features premium materials to create an environment that SsangYong says is "extremely practical in everyday use". There are seven seats inside, with the rearmost row of seats stored beneath the floor. 

Standard equipment includes cruise control, air conditioning, a leather steering wheel and a stereo with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. The higher-spec EX model also gets an electric driver's seat, leather upholstery and rear parking sensors.

SsangYong describe the new car as "a serious off-roader, yet with all the equipment and creature comforts expected of an urban cruiser". The new model comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.

This is the third generation of the Rexton, which first went on sale in 2001. The car will rival the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Land Cruiser in the large SUV market.

Concern over the new 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine

Undoubtedly, a competent and unpretentious vehicle that - a bit like the Dacia range - could/should be accepted almost anywhere, as it does not pretend to be anything other than what it is.

However, I am a little concerned at the ability of the new “W” Rexton’s new 4cyl 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which (only) provides 153bhp and 266lb ft of torque.

For comparison, the previous Rexton’s 5cyl 2.7-litre diesel engine, provided 165bhp @ 4000rpm, and a more substantial 340lb ft of torque @ 1800-3250rpm.

Those figures for the new “W” Rexton, look close enough to the same engine (4cyl 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which provides only 147bhp @ 3400-4000rpm, and again 266lb ft of torque @ 1500-2800rpm), in SsangYong’s smaller/newer Korando.

However, the Korando has a kerb weight of only 1727kg. The (previous) Rexton’s kerb weight was 2101kg. A weight differential of 374kg, which is almost the same weight as four reasonably sized adult passengers!

Edited to add: SsangYong's own web site, is quoting 360lb ft, for the new 4cyl 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine in the new “W” Rexton ?!

Not Fooling Anyone

'Premium materials', no that interior does not look premium and the steering wheel looks terrible. Plus the clock is 30 years out of date. However, I do believe them when they say its a serious off-roader, and given how they seem to be dwindling in numbers, at least the Rexton soldiers on.

Yep, haven't seen a steering wheel that bad since the 75...
