Heading an impressive array of new offerings from Toyota at the Frankfurt motor show on September 15-25 will be the all-new RAV4 and Yaris, shown here in these first official pictures.
The new RAV4 is a size up on the current car, making space for Toyota's retro-styled FJ Cruiser that could slot in below it. The third generation of Europe's best-selling 4x4 arrives in the spring and is expected to have the option of a V6 petrol engine for the first time alongside four-cylinder petrols and turbodiesels.
The new Yaris, already on sale in Japan as the Vitz, also moves up a size to further distance it from the new Aygo citycar. A longer wheelbase creates more room inside and Toyota claims class-leading legroom. Engines should be very similar to the current car’s, but there could be a 1.6-litre option lifted from the Corolla. Interior quality is said to be much improved, with higher-grade plastics. Instruments are mounted in a central binnacle, and the conventional key has been replaced by a starter button. The Yaris will be built in France at Toyota’s Valenciennes factory, and will go on sale in the UK in January.
Alongside Yaris and RAV4 will be the new Hilux pick-up, Toyota's answer to the stylish Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200, and the Corolla Verso with 134bhp and 175bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel engines.
In addition to new production models, Toyota will also be unveiling a duo of speculative concept cars, the Endo microcar and the i-unit personal transport. The three-seater Endo is smaller than the Aygo and features front doors that hinge away from the body, with a hatchback at the rear.
