Currently reading: Upmarket new Swift 'designed for Europe'

There was more interest around the Suzuki stand than might have reasonably been expected at the Paris Motor Show. The reason was the new Swift, which Suzuki describes as a European car built to Japanese standards.

Suzuki says the Swift’s designers and engineers were based in Europe. The design team spent six months ‘refining’ the Swift’s shape and the engineers undertook extensive ‘track tests and road-testing… incorporting feedback from European car enthusiasts’.

Suzuki has been thorough: the car has an air of attention to detail and the dash is upmarket. There’s a choice of a 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines and a 1.3-litre diesel. There are three transmissions: a five-speed manual, a five-speed automated manual and a four-speed auto. Safety is said to be a strong point.

Sales begin in the next few months, with prices expected to start at around £7500.
